Commissioner Factfile. Fim Four.

Who is the company?

The company I'm doing for this factfile about is film four productions. Film four productions is a company which produce films they make it themselves. Also they distribute films meaning they market their films they have physical copies of the film to sell. Film four productions also exhibit films as in they show the films. They have a combination of all three. An example of this would be the inbetweeners movie. Many copies were sold of it. Also film four productions produced the film and exhibited the movie as it was shown in cinemas and Film four.
The parent company is channel four. the parent company own Film four , E4, 4music and more4
I think there is advantage for the success of their films being owned by that parent company as it creates more publicity for the movie. There would be more adverts on all of these channels so more people would acknowledge.

What do the company produce?
The company usually fund around twenty films per year. This is the only company that provide the foment for their films. They are solo finders and co-ructions with other companies. Most of the movies they make are solo however they have had some films which have been co produced such has the eagle, lovely bones and four lions. On average Film
Four contributes most of the money for the films budget they invest over 500,000  per film. Film four contributes a lot to the development of British social realism. They try to show realistically the underclass life of the British. They often use rough camerawork, using real life locations. Also in most of these movies unknown actors are used with usually different accents from Across England.
They use very sensitive themes in ther work such as homesexuality, racism, violence and abuse.

Why is the company important to the film industry?
*To invest around £500,000 per film, at a rate of around 20 films a year
*To support international (including American) independent film-makers by co-investing in innovative and interesting foreign films.(http://www.bfi.org.uk/sites/bfi.org.uk/files/downloads/bfi-film-forever-2012-17.pdf)
Also they offer British films on sister channels such as Channel4.

What have been the key successes in the British film industry?
Flim four have created many successful films over the years. Examples of this would be my beautiful laundrette, slumdog millionaire, looking for eric, and This is England.

Where is the company based?
The films that Film four fund are usually British however they sometimes do fund independent US film makers. Such as the hit film Slumdog millionaire was funded by film four but also directed by an independednt American film maker.
Why is the company important to the UK film industry?
Film four are important to the UK film industry as the produce, exhibit and prepare copies of it themselves. The ethos of the company is to "develop new british talent and be leader of innovation in the British film industry" this is quoted from the pocket guide to filmfour on the 12AS blog. The most key successes as seen above of film four are Looking for Eric, This is England and Slumdog Millionaire. The successes of these films have launched many careers such as Ashely Walters who plays Dushane in topboy also Dev Patel and Ewan McGregor and the famous director Danny Boyle who directed Slumdog millionaire and 127 hours.

Production log week threeeeeee

I've learnt many things about my commissioner. I've learnt that they have significant amount of money. And are owned by channel four. I also learnt film four have many other different sister channels.  This will impact my production as I will keep in mind what sort of films film four produce and try to do something similar to what they produce. I've learnt many things about British social realism sounds. I've learnt the difference between non diegetic sound and diegetic sound and how it has been used in BSR films.  This will impact my production as I will use foley sounds (diegetic)  too show footsteps or car screech. I will use diegetic sound to show the actors swearing and show music blaring out of cars.  I will use sound bridge (non diegetic sound) to show a clock ticking and carry the ticking across other shots.  I would also use a VoiceOver to wrap up the conclusion. Or too tell something about the characters.

Production log week twoooo.

I have learnt that the BSR genre is full of two or more themes , I have Also learnt the types of themes and situations, locations, settings, music, dialogue camera work, and other mise-en-scene that has been used throughout BSR films. I've learnt that natural lighting is a key convention in each films on sometimes artificial lighting is used. For my production I will keep in mind to use natural lighting as it makes it more realistic, and the camera work to be good but not perfect as it needs too relate to the audiences. I will inform this in my production by using underclass settings , so it's set in urban and grimy areas, I will also use natural lighting. The text I found very influential was nil by mouth as it was similar to what I wanted to do for my own production. I will conform to these conventions and will try to use them in my production , I may subvert the ones I think are not as important as the others.

Define BSR

British social realism is a genre which has been created in Britain and is about the struggles of the underclass life. This genre usually indicates what goes on with people's life's. this is usually set in gritty, urban areas. British social realism has developed over the years as it can be seen in the table below. The more recent BSR films contain more sexual abuse, swearing, slang. However the old films had this too but wasn't as common. The storylines differ as well. My favourite one we watched was Nil By mouth it was a very good scene and showed the main themes in BSR films which were violence, domestic abuse, crime.

This is England

This is England represents the genre of British social realism very well throughout the film. The scene I had watched was the combo fight scene between the main guy who is portrayed to be a racist thug and a black man.
The white man is beating up the black man. The genre has been shown so well here because racism and violence is a big factor in most of the British so ill realism films.
Another part where this is England fits into the genre is
The man has several tattoos over his arms and both the younger child and the older man have shaved heads which can be connoted with the racist white makes that shaved there heads and were portrayed as the thugs. Also the flag hanging in the back shows it's set in England so again it fits the genre and also shows being English is the main point of the film. They have pride in being English.
This this fits the British social realism as it shows the man with the cross in the middle of his forehead but also show a the scars in his face and the clothes he is wearing which connotes that he is of the underclass , as so many higher class people don't tend to have tattoos on their foreheads. This is also connotes that everything is revolved  around being english.
This fits the genre because this screenshot contains the violence that has been shown throughout the scene. The bloody face and hands that have been trusted on to his neck connotes that violence plays a big role in the movie and violence is associated with the genre , beat every British social realism films contain violence. And this has been portrayed very well.
This fits the genre because this shot shows the violence but also the room they are in. The room has uneven colours no colour scheme and the room itself looks very gritty which again shows they are underclass which is commonly shown throughout British social realist movies.
The movie has used natural lighting. This has created the shots to be quite dull and not as perfect as Hollywood and big movies would. And every British social realist film use natural lighting and are not as perfect as films that have been created in Hollywood. So this contributes to the fact that this fits into the genre.

past students workkk.

Here is a screenshot of the work we had done in class looking a past students work.

One video I really enjoyed was by Kalkidan and Lorelle called Paw. The storyline was very good and portrayed the the social realist genre good.
One thing I really liked about this was the writing they had used for the credits. The writing was big and bold and was clear to read. Also the writing stayed on long enough for the audience to read and personally i thought the writing was quite gritty which suited the genre.
The closeup they had shot of the main girls face was very effective. It showed the bruises and the nose blood very clearly to the audience and fit the genre because her boyfriend must have hit her as the lyrics in the background music had suggested. I thought this also showed the theme of violence which is shown throughout social realist themes.

I like the long shot the have used. Not only does is show the person but it also shows the surrounding area which is quite urban and is full of council houses and flat so again it goes with the theme.
This is a very good shot as well as it shows the surrounding areas of where the girl is from which is quite gritty and urban.
One thing I didn't like was this part they had shown this for a second to long i would have made it shorter so it was more affective and grabbed the audiences eye.
The match on action they had used for this part was very good. It flew into each part perfectly. I also thought the writing went well with the picture itself as so she looked very small compared to the writing.

Jaya and Hardeep Bridges.
I thought there were some good aspects of their work however it wasn't overall as good it was quite boring and confusing.
I thoguht the over the shoulder shot was quite as it shows where the it has been shot.Which is shown too be quite gritty and its a realistic setting.
I thought this was quite a realistic shot as well as it shows the characters reaction to what the white male is saying. So the audience know what he is saying the character isn't liking.
I didn't like this shot as it made it confusing for me. I don't this had any relevance to what the storyline was about and i think they could have shortened it or show the girl with the women to show her background.
I like the writing they had used as it shows the background of the storyline as its indian. However i think they could have shortened the length of how much they kept this on the screen it was far too long for a only a word.
I didn't like this shot. It was very confusing about what was happening. It looks as if the white male is trying to bother the indian girl however its supposed to be a mixed race relationship. i did not understand the storyline clearly as it didn't show what was happening with the shots clearly enough.

production log week oneeeeee

what have you learnt this week from looking at the mark scheme and peer assessing previous work?
This week i learnt that most of the marks are for technical skills. The material has to be suitable for the genre which is social realist. Also everything has to relate to the brief so it has to be for our target audience which are 16-24 year olds. I have also learnt that each little detail makes a great change in the overall grade, so good music in the background could give you a higher grade. When shooting mise-en-scene has to be included to receive the top grades.  And the plot has to be very creative.
From peer assessing pervious work I have learnt that the music in the background is very important because it links in with the theme which is social realist. I've also learnt that the plot doesn't have too be as good but the camera language meaning shots are far more important in trailer.
this is a table of my assessment for previous years trailers, the mark was out of 60.

Editing workshop evaluation

This is the short video clip we made. This includes match on action. The 180 degree rule and the rule of thirds.
We faced many challenges throughout our production. One of the problems we faced was match on action. Each shot had too lead to the other shot and it was very hard recording it. Another challenge was editing. I struggled a lot at editing our final piece. Because I wanted each shot to flow to the next one and make sense to the audience. If we were able to film again I would change some shots. For example the shot which shows Amneet (the pregnant woman) falling down the stairs I would show a close up of her face to show her expression. By doing this it would create the shot more dramatic.
During our post-production I would change many of the edits i made on the shots. I don't think i did it properly because many of the shots extended on for to long and some shots were cut to short. For example this shot was very long.
The overall strengths of our work was the storyline, it was very different compared to the other storylines we had seen. Another strength was the range of different types of camera shots we chose for example close-ups, long shot, mid shot etc. we used many throughout our work and the end result was quite good. The planning was very good because Bilal and me already knew what we wanted to do so it came together quite well. The effect i used on the shot which shows the pregnant woman falling created the scene to be more intrestting because it was a flashback scene so it was clearer for the audience.
The overall weakness of our work was the match on action. It wasn't as clear and good as it could have been in my opinion.
The improvements i would make to our work would be the match on action add more of it and make it clearer. Also i would add more dialogue for the characters so its clear about what is going on throughout the scene.
