How British social realism themes are used

The
bullet boy:

One of the main themes that has been shown throughout the trailer for bullet boy are corruption of youth, and childhood. In this picture it has been shown very clearly as the little boy no younger than the age of nine is holding a gun pointed towards the camera. this denotes his childhood has ended quickly as he is adjusting to guns. Also corruption of youth has been shown in the second picture as he is getting arrested by the police.
Fishtank:
The main themes that have been shown throughout the trailer is abuse, neglect, rape and corruption of youth.
This image here shows the mother hitting her daughter. This denotes that neglect she gets from the mother and also her mother is an abuser. I will explore this theme in my opening clip by showing the mother hitting her daughter and leaving her all alone in their house which shows neglect and abuse.
Rape has also been used in fishtank. In this picture it is denoted as the girl is erring grabbed by two or more males. Because rape is a very strong concern I will explore this by showing a teenaged girl going through life as she has been raped and showing the way she is coping with it.
London to Brighton:
The key themes shown in this trailer are aspiration and escape, sex, isolatio, corruption of youth and violence.
In the first picture the girl is sitting by herself at the station. This shows neglect and isolation as she is by herself in a crowded place without anyone. She's a runaway child. In the second picture she is shown to be smoking which is corruption of youth as she looks to young to be smoking. I will explore this theme in my opening sequence showing a runaway child running away from home due to neglect by her parents.
Dead mans shoes;the key themes explored in this trailer is violence. Violence has been shown throughout this.
This is showing one of the main characters brother getting tortured and beaten up by another group of people. I would explore violence in my work by showing a gang beating up a weaker victim as he is the weaker victim in this film.
Nil by mouth:
Domestic abuse has been shown throughout this film,
The wife is covered in bruises which indicates she was abused. I will show this theme in my opening sequence by showing the mother protecting her child and ends up getting abused herself.

part sevenn.

part four.

part five.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Camera, angle, shot movement and position.

One of the main ways we portrayed a particular social group was using various camera angles in order to show what sort of person they were. For example we used a Low angle to show the girls's mother to portray that she is superior and a scary woman. We used a high angle to show the girl in order to portray that she is a vulnerable. Even though she puts on a act that she is tough when her mother is in the picture she is a vulnerable girl. this made the audience have some sympathy for her Using a TWO SHOT to represent how the victim felt when the main girl becky pushed and swore at her showed how aggressive she was and how scared the victim was. In order to show how scared the victim was we used a close-up in order to show her fear towards the aggressive and chavy girl.

Editing.

We used a fast pace throughout the opening sequence in order to show how fast her life was moving. Also make it realistic as possible. For example at the beginning of the opening sequence we show the girl finding out she is pregnant and calling her boyfriend telling him she is pregnant. we use a fast pace to show her worried and angry but the next moment she is applying makeup and getting ready to go out. This represents two different parts of society. Such as young pregnant teenagers but also people who avoid situations and deal with them the next day.

Sound.

the soundtrack we used begun when the protagonist walked out of the door. At the beginning it has a asian tone which portrays a clearer identity of the protagonists background and her ethnicity as she is asian. As she starts walking and more action occurs the pace of the music begins to get faster showing as she is moving fast so is the pace of the music. As she calms down in the park whilst smoking the pace gets slower and is softer showing that she is relaxed.

Mise-en-scene.

Location: The location we used was Ilford. Which is know to be a scruffy, gritty and dirty place. This shows the stereotypical representation of underclass people living in poverty. The location suits well with the BSR genre as these areas are all over England. This also emphasises the way the protagonist is living. For example the stairs she goes up to reach her house is full of rubiish such as chicken boxes, paper etc.
Costume: The costume our protagonist wore was oversized teeshirt and jogging bottoms. This was very stereotypical as underclass people do not have flashy clothes as many people do. This represented to the audience that she is very basic and wears only basic clothing as she does not have much money to buy flashy clothes.

Arbitray signs.

We used arbitray signs in our work. At the end of the opening sequence the protagonist is on her bed crying and her mother (antagonist) is blocking the doorway not letting her leave. As if she has cornered her. Our title is CORNERED and the girl is shown to be getting cornered by her mum. This had no direct connection to the title however it was a sign.

Part eighty.

Here is a video of my preliminary task.
Overall i thought my preliminary task was quite successful as we watched other preliminary tasks that past students had done before us and we thought we would come up with a very creative idea. Such as in our one the lady is going to the doctors as she is pregnant. However she realises she has had an miscarriage. We see a flashback of her sitting on the floor crying. We were given a task that we had too shoot two people having a conversation and person one leaving the room.

I thought the creativity in this was very good. As it was original nobody had the same storyline as us.Another strength was the range of different types of camera shots we chose for example close-ups, long shot, mid shot etc. we used many throughout our work and the end result was quite good. The planning was very good because Bilal and me already knew what we wanted to do so it came together quite well. The effect i used on the shot which shows the pregnant woman falling created the scene to be more intrestting because it was a flashback scene so it was clearer for the audience.

The things i thought were less successful was the match on action. It was not clear and looked very jumpy. in editing cutting the shots to make it lead into the next one smoothly was a struggle for us as we could not find the right moment to cut the shot. Another unsuccessful aspect was we did
not concntrate as much on the pregnant woman's face. We should have focused on her facial expression whilst she was falling down to make it more dramatic and seem more realistic. I think our storyline was very unique however we could have used better shots in our story-boards to make the audience understand our work more. I slacked a lot in the project.

I think we did progress a lot. As in the preliminary project i did not contribute as much as i should have.  however for our production now i did contribute a lot. More than i did before. Our editing skills did progress a lot as the match on action was very good due to our teacher showing us clip processor which made the match on action more precise and it flowed more.

Another way we progressed for our BSR film was making each shot count. meaning we were not wasting any shots such as we kept to the storyline and used several close-ups which we did not have in the preliminary task. This made it more dramatic and realistic as we wanted.

PART THRE.

The brief. Part 1

For this production we were given a Brief which we had too stick to for our film. The was a guidance for us on who we were creating this for. How old they should be and the location. Also the company we were making this for which was film four.

You have been approached by Film 4 to make a new British Social Realist film aimed at British 16-24 year olds. To give Film 4 an idea of how your film will develop they have asked you to produce the first two minutes of the film, providing a clear sense of the graphical, editing and musical style your film will use. To protect Film 4’s reputation as a leader in British cinema the film must conform to the conventions of the Social Realist genre, and meet all audience expectations for this type of film. Finally, to keep costs low, all visual and audio material used in the film must be entirely original, with the exception of stock sound effects.

I believe my opening sequence did meet the brief. As the main actress is portrayed to be sixteen year old and the brief had stated to target our work towards 16-24 year olds. We had explored many themes within our work which was usual of the BSR genre. Such as corruption of youth, domestic abuse and aspiration. this would be relatable to our target audience as teenager pregnancy is widely dispersed and is a universal issue. Another way this could be relatable to our target audience is corruption of youth. Many teenagers do smoke and drink alcohol considering that they are not allowed too. This is similar of a BSR genre as the same themes has been explored in Fishtank.

Our title was 'CORNERED' this can have several connotations. such as the title could mean someone is being cornered on the street. This could also mean someone being trapped and trying to get free but her problems are corning upon her.

In our opening sequence the main girl is shown to be on her phone talking to someone about her being pregnant. She hangs up aggressively and chucks her pregnancy stick and soon begins too put makeup on. she leaves the bedroom and goes to the kitchen. she picks up cigarettes and a baracdi bottle then leaves the house. She is on the phone to her friend and her friend cancels on her. She is very angry and pushes and threatens girl. Later on she is shown in the park drinking and smoking. She leaves the park and makes the journey towards her house. The new shot is of her waking up and finding the pregnancy stick. Tears are rolling down her face and her mum is being verbally abusive towards her and the opening sequence ends here.
