Continuity Editing Exercise.

For this unit we were given a scenario which was " A character opens a door, crosses a room and sits down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue." We decided to show a woman who is pregnant and suddenly falls down the stairs and goes to visit her Doctor to see whether her baby is fine or not. The baby does not survive the fatal drop. As a group we chose to do something very dark.

The key media language skills we were trying to demonstrate were shot reverse shot which is a shot on one persons face then the second persons face and then back to the first persons face. The reason why we used shot reverse shot was because it shows the characters facial expressions which creates more tension about what the doctor is going to say and makes the audience find out whats going to happen next. We also tried to demonstrate match on action and the 180-degree rule. The match on action shot is when there is a cut between two parrallel actions which are mirrored in order to suggest a strong relationship between two shots. We chose to use shot reverse shot because it shows the characters expressions about the news they are about too hear. The 180 degree rule is shown in the video below. We also used the rule of thirds.

The person I worked with for this project was Bilal Bashir. I chose to work with him because he is my best friend but also we get along very well and listen to each others ideas so it would be good. We elaborated each others idea. For example the first idea we had come up with was to show a surprise party. However thinking about how we would plan this out we realized that it wouldn't work. So then I came up with the idea of a pregnant woman and Bilal elaborated to it. We wanted something very different and creative so we decided to show that the pregnant woman falls down and loses her baby so she has to go visit her doctor.
Our grouping was very successful. The outcome was very good and also we worked good as a team. We listened to each others ideas.

I used my creativity very well to develop the scenario. I didn't want go for something usual such as someone getting bullied or they're in a police station. I wanted to do something different not that any other student had done. Plus the scenario was very simple it could be anything. That is why my first idea was to show and surprise party because it followed the scenario. Someone walking in exchanging a couple of lines of dialogue and walking out. This was creative because nobody had thought about doing this and it was different. The scenario we used was used in a very dark story-line.

Our storyboard was successful. Everything was clear and the drawings were quite good too. Plus we had a mulitple of different shots. Such as shot reverse shot and close ups. We also used match on action which is a cut between two parallel actions are mirrored in order to suggest a strong relationship between two shots. This has clearly been shown in this video.
We did make some changes to our storyboard. We had forgotten too add shot reverse shot. We only had short reverse. Also we added match on action. Our 180 degree rule was good we done it well.
Here are pictures of our storyboard.
